Ancient ParishAn Ancient Parish is a Church of England parish which, until the 19th century, had both ecclesiastical and civil functions. of Farnham St Andrew. Hale St John the Evangelist became a separate parish in 1845, a daughter church of St John: The church of Upper Hale St Mark is opposite the cemetery. Friends of Surrey Cemeteries (Surrey Cemeteries: a survey, 2012): Text from the survey is reproduced with permission. Opened 1872, 4 acres, 2 chapels. Transferred from Waverley BC to Farnham TC 2006. 01252 823193. Meeting at Hale church 4 Apr 1871. Plot adjacent to Bishops School in Hungry Hill donated by War Office. Sidney Stapley architect. Borrowed £1000 but total cost came to £1150. Consecrated by Bishop of Winchester 1 Nov 1872. Burial Board transfer to council 27 Jul 1926. SHC 7093/1/1/45 burial register 1872-1882 records:- number, name, description, age, place of death (Hale or Union or other parish), burial date, minister, grave no, consecrated unconsecrated, if from external parish. 1931 newspaper report says a man and a boy employed here. Area of 4 acres in 1947, all cemetery. Original area by road plus modern block behind wall at rear. Visited 2004. Area by road includes fenced off derelict chapels and a small number of memorials, many in poor condition. Modern area behind this is a typical municipal rectangle with no plantings and very ordinary memorials in rows. It is quiet however and surrounded by hedges.
