Friends of Surrey Cemeteries (Surrey Cemeteries: a survey, 2012):
Randalls Road, Leatherhead. Opened 1961 on 55 acres. Dignity plc. 01372 363181 SHC 6090/3. Built in 11 acres by Wimbledon Borough Council – architect L H Brady, builder T R Roberts Ltd. Opened 11 July 1961. Overall site 55 acres purchased 1932 in anticipation of need. Some controversy because the local councils wished to have a joint development rather than one run by Wimbledon which they could only use at arms length. Built in Randalls Park north of Leatherhead on the west of the A245 running across to the Mole River. 529 gravestone pictures on gravestone photographic resource. Visited June 2011 – 4 cremations this day. Three rooms set aside with urns for cremains. Extensive site on edge of town between the A245 and River Mole. Very well kept with many ground staff. Extensive range of trees including a Redwood. Modern brick buildings, undistinguished. Metal plaques 2”x 4” set in concrete marking out specific areas in lawns. Individual metal memorial plaques 5”x 3”, many in multiples of 6 in a 3ft by 1.5ft area which has 2” flat blocks around their edge. Area between cemetery internal road and houses along A245 has burials including a Jewish area. Plot for Royal School for the Blind. A couple of above ground 3ft high modern mausolea, one double width in area with metal fencing and trees. Signs regarding “exceptional problems” of wildlife begging food. Also notice re safety testing – metal posts and black/yellow tape for unsafe memorials. Large walled garden (c 2 acres) adjoining Georgian house behind crematorium is very attractive memorial garden, not just roses but a wide range of plantings. Randalls Park Cemetery and Crematorium is located in the Ancient Parishan Ancient Parish is a Church of England parish which, until the 19th century, had both ecclesiastical and civil functions of Leatherhead St. Mary and St. Nicholas Earlier burials may have taken place in the parish church graveyards which was surveyed by Alfred Bax ca 1890. Bax's notes are in the Library of the Surrey Archaeological Society, they were transcribed by WSFHS volunteers in October 2015. There are over 7,100 names for Leatherhead in the Surrey Index of Names from a variety of sources.
