Stoughton was originally part of the Ancient Parishan Ancient Parish is a Church of England parish which had both ecclesiastical and civil functions of Stoke next Guildford, it became a separate ecclesiastical parishan ecclesiastical parish is an administrative area within the Church of England or Roman Catholic church. It is distinct from the civil parish, a local government unit in England in 1893 and was known as Stoke-next-Guildford Emmanuel Stoughton. In 1968 the parish was renamed Emmanuel Stoughton.

The Monumental Inscriptions for Stoke St. John were noted for the Society in 1977. We also have copies of Alfred Bax's survey of 1903 (taken on a "warm and sunny day") and an undated manuscript ca 1911 from the Pardoe Collection. Our thanks to the Librarian, Surrey Archaeological Society for allowing us to copy these latter two manuscripts.

The Surrey Monumental Inscriptions Library includes some 991 names for Stoke St John which date from the mid 1700s to the mid 1900s.
